It was an organization dedicated to the reform of psychiatry, the promotion of mental health research, the creation of outpatient services and expansion of the discipline into fields like public health. When the US entered the war, the NCMH took a keen interest in the urgent problem of war neuroses. Under the leadership of the psychiatrist Thomas Salmon, who became a consultant for the AEF, the organization began converting its members and their institutions into a psychiatric service for the US Army’s medical corps.
