When the US entered the war, the NCMH took a keen interest in the urgent problem of war neuroses. Under the leadership of the psychiatrist Thomas Salmon, who became a consultant for the AEF, the organization began converting its members and their institutions into a psychiatric service for the US Army’s medical corps.
