Letter from Paul A. Brent to Robert L. Jackson
Paul A. Brent sent this letter to his high school mentor, Robert L. Jackson, asking for assistance in his application to the Peabody Conservatory, which at the time did not admit African-American students. His application started a long discussion among the Board of Trustees about whether to change the policy barring African-American students from the Conservatory.

Letter from Reginald Stewart to William L. Marbury about Paul A. Brent
This hand written note is from Reginald Stewart, Director of the Conservatory, to William L. Marbury, President of the Peabody Institute.
Dear Bill,
The attached correspondence is obviously about a negro music student. What do you want to do about it? My own feeling is to admit him only if, upon examination, he proves to be extremely talented.
Sincerely,
Reg

Response from Louise J. Cooper to William L. Marbury
In this letter, Louise J. Cooper, a member of the Peabody Institute Board of Trustees and the Conservatory Committee, responds to William Marbury with her opinion on the admission of Paul A. Brent to the Conservatory.
My dear Mr. Marbury -
Have read your letter carefully and agree with you. If Paul A. Brent is qualified for admission to study in the advanced department of the Peabody Conservatory he should be accepted. Being in Maine I have had no opportunity to connect with any Trustee. Hall Pleasants arrives tomorrow and I shall be glad to look it over with him. I hope you and Natalie and the children have a fine vacation.
Sincerely Yours
Louise J. Cooper
