Spring

"Spring"

(included in Ladies Valentines, 1810)

With timid footsteps spring advances

To scatter flow’rets [thro’] the Vale

Oft backward turns with fearful glances

And dreads to meet the hostile gale

And so does love at first essay

His influence o’er the heart to gain

By gentle steps pursues his way

And trembles at your Eye disdain

Then cheer his hopes his fears disarm

Your smile can like the sunbeams warm.
