Title
Early International Jewish Student
Description
Although it is not mentioned here that Aaron Ember ('01) was Jewish, it is noted later, as he would go on to teach Semitics at Hopkins. He was one of the first Jews to come from outside the Baltimore community and showcases the level of acceptance the University had for Jews at that time. There was no doubt anti-Semitism on campus then, both from the University and from the students. Nonetheless Ember could feel comfortable as a Jewish student from Poland. Similarly slightly later another student could feel confident sharing his plan to become a rabbi with the yearbook, which would be encouraging of his efforts.
