Description: A portrait of Vivien Theodore Thomas, the pioneering African-American surgical technician who helped develop the famous blue baby operation, was commissioned by his many colleagues and trainees at Johns Hopkins and was presented at the Biennial meeting of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association in 1971. This recording of the presentation features speeches by George Zuidema, director of the department of surgery; Russell Nelson, president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital; C. Rollins Hanlon, and J. Alex Haller, two surgeons who worked with Thomas; David E. Rogers, dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; and Vivien Thomas himself.
