Description
Katherine Olmsted (class of 1912) began her work with the Red Cross as part of a commission of doctors and nurses sent in August, 1917 to Romania by way of the Trans-Siberian railway to fight typhus and study health conditions. The commission passed through Moscow, where then Russian Premier Alexander Kerensky presented each member with a Russian Freedom medal, along with supplies. He was ousted from power two months later by the Bolsheviks.
Circular copper colored medal with portrait and inscribed name of A. F. Kerenski [Russian premier 1917] on front, cannon and inscription "Za svobodu Rossii vpered"!" [For the freedom of Russia, forward!] on back. Attached to a blue ribbon with two veritcal white stripes with thin black stripes on either side of the white stripes.
