Barth’s photographic portrait has frequently appeared in newspapers, as an accompaniment to book reviews and profiles. Occasionally, he has contributed to newspapers as well, writing opinion pieces and features. Through repetition in newspapers—which reach a large and diverse readership—Barth’s image has become almost as prominent as his writing, and has acquired an iconographic set of features: bald pate, often topped with a beret; distinctive facial hair; imposing spectacles.
